Here it comes

Tailor made for our site - and
arriving in style along the new
southern entrance!

The steel tube diet to keep
matters busy

The first pile for Cloud 8 is prepared
for driving

The first pile marked and ready to go

The rig is radio controlled by Steve
(right). Another 4 meter steel section
is prepared.

The protected trees prove
a challenge

And once in the ground, the piles
need to be tested for their load
bearing capabilities

The steel piles protrude from
the earth

The Cellcore goes into the trench
and is covered with blinding

A Cross section showing how
Cellcore creates the void to protect
the ground beam

The blinded trenches before piles
are cut to length

The cut piles with the starter bars in position - Pecafil at the ready

Pecafil in place - 3 men,
1 day - a great result

Reinforcement bars awaiting
mesh to create reinforced wall

ReBars connected and now most
of the starter bars in place for
the reinforced wall

The Pochins lorry prepares

Gives you an idea of the
reach we needed

As the photo was described to
me - 'some sad old git playing
with the big boys toys.'

Everything in this picture - a
clear idea of the days operation

Lower level - pour complete.
Upper level continues

Utility and drainage being installed.
Note kicker for reinforced wall.

Shuttering trays for reinforced
wall being positioned

Soakaway for the internal pond

Shuttering the rebar and
mesh visible

Reinforced wall being poured

Stirling Lloyd (tanking/waterproofing) undercoating the primed wall

Topcoat being applied - whole job complete in 6 hours

Blockwork set out in preparation
for the beam and block flooring

Level 1 beam and block flooring
finished and ready for grouting

Level 2 almost complete and
ready for grout

Level 2 appearing - at last better
weather is with us again

As a result of the shape of the
window Tony, one of the Blockies,
wanted to know if I had a pet giraffe

Level 1 showing the garage and
utility area - note the blockwork built
off the tanked reinforced wall

The chaps from Drill-Cut the diamond drilling firm who came to sort out THE error - 2 missed windows in the
reinforced wall! Don't ask!

Front elevation of the living area
awaiting steels

Northern wall of the accommodation
area showing the flying window

Western accommodation
elevation awaiting steels.

Western elevation of living area

Level 1 ready to receive
structural steels

Level 2 ready for steels

Fabrication at L G Kimbers - the
largest column in the paint shop

More columns in the paint shop

Welding a column fixing arm

Tidying up a Parallel Flange
Channel for the paint shop

One of the large horizontal beams
on Level 1 having a cover panel
welded into position

Ainscough arriving down
our narrow lane

The first steels being
lifted into position

Chris the Ainscough driver (mit
cigar) in laid-back mode while
Grand Designs and Kevin McCloud
film in the background

Ray of Kimbers lifts another large
section of steel from the back
of the truck. The truck's large
lifting arm and the Ainscough crane
worked together to erect some steels

The result of the Crane and the
lifting arm working together

Steels fixed to create the cantilevered
bay window over the rear pond

The complex garage section ready
to
receive the precast flooring

Steels in place around the pool
and the first flight of stairs

Hanson's precast flooring being
lifted into position by Ains
cough

The red bags are known as Crash
Bags and are designed to
protect a falling man

Some of the floor planks require
straps (the red steel) to hold
them in position

The flooring fit was filmed and my
damaged foot was the cause of some
mirth and questioning

One for the anoraks (that's me) -
a Junction point for several steels
and difference in the thickness of
the floor plank from 150mm to
100mm - can you spot it all?

With planks in position grout
is lifted to fill the gaps

Another grout delivery

Grout is swept into the gaps which
further strengthens the structure

Level 1 complete except for some
ungrouted planks to facilitate a
further fitting of steel columns

Level 2 all done

Levels 1 & 2 - the whole
job complete in a day

The Hanson guys
-
Paul Pettifor, Dave Worton,
Chris
Waller, Matt Wherly
and Darren Harrison

Students from the Oxford School
of Architecture visiting Cloud 8

The Kimber rig on the limit
fitting the final column

Level 3 - this gives you the
idea of progress

The Gilbert protectors do their bit
as the building goes skywards

Main bedroom - wonderful
airy rooms will be created

Main bedroom with adjoining
bathroom and dressing room

Stairs rebar and formworks between
level 4 and 3 with the large landing

Same stairs after the pour

Poured stairs level 2-3

The trial wingform roof section
900mm wide

Three sections will be bolted
together and craned into position

An idea of scale
